The Four Percentage Formulas Everyone Should Know
- Percent of a number: result = value × (percent ÷ 100) — e.g. a 15% tip on a $60 bill is 60 × 0.15 = $9.
- Reverse (what percent): percent = part ÷ whole × 100 — e.g. 45 correct answers out of 60 is 75%.
- Change between values: change = (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100 — e.g. 80 → 100 is a +25% increase.
- Discounted price: final = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100) — e.g. $120 at 25% off costs $90, saving $30.
Percentage Pitfalls That Trip People Up
Successive discounts don't add
20% off then another 20% off is not 40% off. It's 1 − (0.8 × 0.8) = 36% total. Each discount applies to the reduced price.
+50% then −50% isn't break-even
100 → 150 → 75. Percentage changes multiply, they don't cancel out.
Points vs. percent
A rate going from 4% to 5% rose by 1 percentage point, but by 25% in relative terms. News headlines often blur the two.
Percent of what?
"Sales grew 200%" sounds huge, but if sales were $1,000 they're now only $3,000 — the base matters as much as the percent.
